چکیده

The exact solution of the many-body problem in the framework of the nuclear shell model with a realistic residual Hamiltonian makes it possible to study the fragmentation of simple configurations as a function of excitation energy and interaction strength. The analysis is performed for 839 states with quantum numbers JT500 in a system of 12 valence particles within the sd shell. Our statistics allow us to establish the generic shape of the strength function in the region of strong mixing. For the realistic interaction, the strength function is close to Gaussian in the central part and has exponential wings. The spreading width is larger than predicted by the standard golden rule. At the artificially suppressed interaction strength, we recover the Breit-Wigner shape and the golden rule for the spreading width. The transition between these regimes agrees with theoretical considerations based on the idea of chaotic dynamics. @S0556-2813~96!03609-6#

Spreading Widths of Doorway States

As a function of energy E, the average strength function S(E) of a doorway state is commonly assumed to be Lorentzian in shape and characterized by two parameters, the peak energy E0 and the spreading width Γ . The simple picture is modified when the density of background states that couple to the doorway state changes significantly in an energy interval of size Γ. For that case we derive an ap...

ncation method for shell model calculations NOVEMBER 1994

A method of truncating the large shell model basis is outlined. It relies on the order given by the unperturbed energies of the basis states and on the constancy of their spreading widths. Both quantities can be calculated by a simple averaging procedure. The method is tested in the sd shell where the JT dimensions are of the order of a few thousand. It proves to be very effective in the middle...

Correlations probed in direct two-nucleon removal reactions

Final-state-exclusive momentum distributions of fast, forward-traveling residual nuclei, following two-nucleon removal from fast secondary radioactive beams of projectile nuclei, can and have now been measured. Assuming that the most important reaction mechanism is the sudden direct removal of a pair of nucleons from a set of relatively simple, active shell-model orbital configurations, such di...

Damping of rotational and compound states in warm nuclei

The damping widths associated with compound states of rotating deformed nuclei is analyzed by means of the microscopic shell model calculations. Because of the doorway mechanism present in the damped collective rotation, the rotational E2 transitions is characterized by not only the rotational damping width Γrot but also the spreading width Γnpnh of many-particle many-hole shell model states fo...
